Annual report “Young families in Lithuania: analysis of the demographic situation”

The National Family Council in Lithuania dedicated its fourth annual report to an overview of the situation of young families in Lithuania, continuing previous initiatives on the topic of demography. The report is based on a study by demographer Dr. Daumantas Stumbrys, which reveals that Lithuania still lacks a comprehensive assessment of the situation and needs of young people and young families – there is a lack of monitoring, scientific analysis and evaluation necessary for effective family and demographic policy.

Since the Council was established, they have emphasised that family policy must become a national priority, alongside defence and security. Although warnings about the threat of depopulation were issued more than 20 years ago, no adequate measures have been taken. Measures to promote fertility alone are not enough – consistent investment in families is necessary.

The report also includes an analysis of the situation in three municipalities (Vilnius, Utena and Vilkaviškis), emphasising the need for differentiated regional policies. The report concludes with the Council’s recommendations, which it hopes will encourage further research and discussion on demographic and family policy issues.
