Genitori Tosti publishes open letter about the situation of family carers in Italy

Associazione Genitori Tosti in Tutti i Posti, a network of family carers in Italy, have issued an open letter to ask whether work on the Italian law on the recognition of family carers will resume shortly in Italy and whether the fund for family carers, established by paragraph 254 of Law 205/17, will be re-instated.

The full letter can be viewed here in Italian.

In the open letter, Genitori Tosti state that they have been following the progress of this law since 2013, launching information campaigns and petitions, organising events, and producing the first and so far only Italian essay on the subject, published in 2022 [’The silent army. Family Caregivers“, Ed.], produced the first report on family carers based on a sample of more than 2,000 people, and is fighting for the recognition of family carers as workers, i.e. those 24-hour carers forced to give up their jobs to care for their family members are the ones who most need a specific law.

‘We would also like to emphasise,’ concludes the letter, ‘that this category of family carers finds it very difficult to represent itself, as the burden of care is so overwhelming that real family carers are unable to attend, and the few, such as our Association, who do try, are not listened to or taken into consideration.’

Genitori Tosti have also reacted to the proposed budgetary law for 2026 which has reduced the funds eamarked for family carers from 30 million euros to just over 1 million euros in 2026. You can view the testimonies of family carers here:
