The film Mon Inséparable tells the story of a young adult with an intellectual disability who is about to become a father, exploring the delicate balance between caregiving and parenthood. Released on December 25th 2024, it essentially follows the journey of a son and mother seeking independence from one another. The film sheds light on the complex parent-child relationship when disability is involved, addressing themes of support, autonomy, emancipation, and the right to freedom of choice for young adults with disabilities.
During the interview on France Inter for the film’s release, Unapei’s vice-president Elisabeth Lammers highlighted the struggles of parents of children with disabilities, stating, “Parents should be just parents – not nurses, taxi drivers, or therapists.” Alarmingly, 65% of parents still find it difficult to balance caregiving and parenting roles, emphasising the urgent need for stronger support systems.
