In Macedonia, about 26.000 mothers live alone with their children and about 9.000 fathers are single parents. COFACE’s member “Youth of Diverse Families” participated to International Conference for Single Parents that took place in November 2024 in Budapest, Hungaryand later shared their insights in an interview, reflecting on the key takeaways from the event.
All across Europe, COFACE members continuously work to contribute to positive outcomes for diverse types of families in a changing society, including single-parent households. Organisations such as La Ligue des Familles and Single Parents Foundation have both recently and respectively put a spotlight on concrete ways to support and empower single parents in Europe from Belgium to Hungary.
This online meeting is open to COFACE members and partners working on financial inclusion matters. It will feature speakers from the COFACE secretariat, Finance Watch and Single parents foundation Isadora Duncan (Spain).
Familias Monoparentales (FAMS), declared that single parents don’t depend on other parents, but on the services offered by the Spanish government. This relationship between single parents and government cannot work when more than 65% of single parents are looking for part-time work so they can be available for their children in the afternoons. This means reduced income to pay for childcare and the costs that come with infancy.
COFACE member, The Single Parents’ Centre (Egyszülős Központ) and the Find Yourself Association organised a joint conference on the theme of single parent families and children with special needs. The event’s main themes were the situation of these families, issues of education and work, and the related personal stories.
While single motherhood does not automatically mean vulnerability, statistics, and testimonies show that this status puts women at increased risk of poverty and social exclusion. On this International women’s rights day, COFACE Families Europe is calling on the EU and Member States to act now for the economic and social rights of single mothers.
COFACE member, UNAF conducted a survey among 250 families highlighting the need for mental health support among single parents in France.
In March 2020 Spain, like Italy and other European countries, introduced a hard lockdown in parts or the whole country.
