The need for taking the family perspective in migration

Transnational Family Dynamics in Europe (TraFaDy) is a network that aims to deepen the knowledge of the growing, rapidly changing phenomenon and dynamics of transnational families. COFACE is an active member of this network, making the link between emerging research and EU policy frameworks.

It is funded by the EU through COST Action 21143, and started in October 2022. COST Action funding aims to connect research initiatives across Europe and to enable individuals to grow their ideas by sharing them with their peers. A second aim is to build bridges between stakeholders and policy makers.

Some members of the TraFaDy network co-wrote an article entitled: “
Transnational family dynamics in Europe: the need for taking the family perspective in migration” where they take a non-research but more political and admittedly Western European- based view of TraFaDy and what it may be able to achieve within the current societal context.

The article explores how an international network on transnational families, Transnational Family Dynamics in Europe (TraFaDy) can try to help deepen knowledge and joint action among different groups of stakeholders such as non-governmental organisations and researchers. It shows the current background that makes a down-to-earth and family-oriented approach to the migration debate very difficult. The societal context includes the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic that deeply affected family life, the defensive spirit leading the debate on ‘migration waves’ and, contrary to this, the discussion on the need for skilled workers. The article in particular refers to the recently adopted but still intensely debated new EU Asylum and Migration Pact.
