Hearing well, Living better: FIAPAS shines a light on older people with deafness

On 9 June 2025, the Spanish Confederation of Families of Deaf People (FIAPAS) held an important Talk entitled “Older people with deafness. Hearing well, Living better”. The event brought together experts and stakeholders to highlight the need for prevention, early detection, and an active life to ensure older people with hearing loss can fully exercise their rights and enjoy a better quality of life.

Broadcast from the Servimedia set, the talk tackled key challenges that many older people with hearing loss still face: persistent stigma, lack of self-awareness about hearing difficulties, the high cost of hearing aids, and gaps in professional training for those working closely with older people. Speakers also called for more commitment from professionals, patients, and families to address these barriers together.

Given the high prevalence of hearing loss in later life and the negative consequences of leaving it untreated, FIAPAS aims to keep the issue on the public agenda and to improve conditions for older people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

The event was part of the Programme for the Defense of Rights and Promotion of Participation and Active Life of Older People with deafness (2025), funded by the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030, under the 0,7-grant call, and co-funded by the ONCE Foundation.

The talk is now available to watch with English subtitles on FIAPAS’ YouTube channel. Watch the full talk here.
