Two COFACE member organisations recently collaborated on a shared project. Together Ligue des Familles and Fond du Logement Wallonie, launched a survey to identify the needs of large families in Belgium.

Families today are increasingly diverse and multiple, and often depending on their (re)composition, the number of children in a household can vary significantly over time, bringing new challenges and needs.

The survey targets families with three or more children or stepchildren and seeks to better understand their everyday experiences and challenges. It covers a wide range of topics related to work–life balance, family organisation, housing conditions, and social perceptions of large families.

Participants were asked questions such as: “Do you run non-stop between work and children’s activities? Or is it more relaxed at home?”, “Is organising school holidays a hassle or a business that is running smoothly?”, “Is it sometimes a bit complicated for children to share a room, or is your accommodation suitable for everyone?” “Have you ever felt prejudiced against large families?” and many more questions.

By gathering direct input from families, this initiative aims to contribute to a better understanding of the realities faced by large families and to support future advocacy efforts on their behalf.
For information, the survey has just closed, and now awaiting the final results.
