Digital technologies are an integral part of everyday family life, offering new opportunities for learning, communication and connection. At the same time, they can also present challenges, particularly when it comes to children’s and young people’s wellbeing. In response, COFACE member organisation UNAF – Unión de Asociaciones Familiares has developed a practical guide to support families in preventing the excessive or harmful use of technology.

Rather than focusing on restriction, the guide promotes a balanced and positive approach to digital parenting. It encourages families to engage with children’s online lives through education, open dialogue and the establishment of healthy boundaries. This approach recognises that supporting children in the digital environment is not only about safety, but also about fostering responsible and confident use of technology.

The guide provides families with clear and accessible information, structured around three main areas. First, it outlines key warning signs that may indicate problematic or excessive use of digital devices. These signals can help parents and caregivers better understand when intervention or support may be needed.

Second, the resource offers practical, everyday recommendations that families can easily integrate into their routines. These tips are designed to support a more mindful and balanced use of technology, helping to reduce potential risks while maintaining the benefits that digital tools can bring.

Finally, the guide includes ideas to encourage healthy digital habits within the family. By promoting shared rules, open communication and positive role modelling, it highlights how families can work together to create a supportive digital environment.

Importantly, the guide frames digital education as a form of care and protection. By equipping parents and caregivers with the right tools and knowledge, it contributes to strengthening families’ capacity to navigate an increasingly digital world.

This initiative reflects UNAF Spain’s ongoing commitment to supporting families in adapting to social and technological changes. It also aligns with COFACE’s broader mission to promote child wellbeing and empower families across Europe.

Families, professionals and organisations are encouraged to explore the guide and share it within their networks to help raise awareness and support more families in developing healthy digital practices.
